Exhibition
hello shallow
Kathrin Graf and Bettina Marx
Kunsthaus Eurode, Herzogenrath, 2019
hello shallow is the first exhibition of the two artists Kathrin Graf and Bettina Marx. Although they have been working together as the artist duo tiefkeller since 2015, this is the first time they are showing their individual works together.
A connecting element between the sculptures of Kathrin Graf and the paintings of Bettina Marx is their interest in textures and surfaces.
For hello shallow, the two artists combine their works - Bettina Marx: painted cushions and a wall painting, Kathrin Graf: sculptures made of glazed and fired ceramics, plaster and shaving foam - into a site-specific installation.
Although at first glance the surface is associated with superficiality and artificiality, on closer inspection it turns out to be a huge, complex field. The surface is a membrane that hides, that holds the unexpected and that connects to the inside and outside. It deals with the unspoken, is transformable and changeable because it is not separated from the environment. It is a membrane that is connected to the preconscious physical knowledge and experience that is greater than that of consciousness.

"untitled" is based on the cast of a "Schulpe" (calcareous "backbone" of an octopus), which are often found as washed up flotsam on seashores.
I made two casts (front and back) from which I developed a multi-part series in plaster.
I am fascinated by the layered surface of the "Schulpe", its lightness and fragility.

The work is part of a series of 6 ceramic pieces based on body casts. I chose soft clay as the material, so that when I pull it off the body, the material is shaped into its own form. The surface is created by applying and removing the glaze.
Where does the outside begin, where the inside? Is there a boundary where my ideas merge with the
material and the material with my ideas? How do boundaries materialize?
