Kathrin Graf (*1984, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler) is a German sculptor living and working in Bonn. She received her MA Fine Art at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam (2017-2019) and studied painting at the Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences, Bonn (2003-2007).
Her material-based approach explores the interactive relationship between body and matter and its social meaning. Inspired by New Materialism, Graf experiments with a variety of construction and everyday materials such as paste, plaster, paintable lime, shaving foam, and silicone. The result of her work manifests itself in fragile, thin-walled objects and installations that aim less at representation than seeking the processual, the unstable, and the transformable. The physical and sensory experience is central to her work, with the material considered an active partner in her creative process. Graf explores themes of uncertainty, transience, vitality and sensuality in an increasingly digitalized, controlled and security-oriented society.
Kathrin Graf has solo exhibitions as well as group exhibitions on a national and international level. Her recent solo exhibitions include Silver Skin, Museum Haus Opherdicke, Unna (2022), -5, tiefkeller, Bonn (2021), hello shallow, Kunsthaus Eurode, Herzogenrath (2019) and Science + Fiction. On the Relationship between Imagination and Reality, Städtische Galerie am Abdinghof, Paderborn (2015). Recent group exhibitions include Strangers, Rongwrong, Amsterdam (2022), Potluck, Gallery 17717, Seoul (2021), Festival of Choices, Het Glazen Huis, Amsterdam (2019), and Jahresgaben 2017, Bonner Kunstverein.
Graf received a working grant from the City of Bonn (2022) and the NEUSTART project grant for visual artists, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (2021), in 2017 the CAWA studio grant, Amsterdam and a project grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn. From 2014-2017 she was holder of the studio stipend of the Bonner Kunstverein.
Kathrin Graf is part of the artist duo tiefkeller (with Bettina Marx) and extends her field of work through further collaborative projects.
