Science + fiction. Über das Verhältnis von Vorstellung und Wirklichkeit
Kathrin Graf and Alexandra Knie
Städtische Galerie am Abdinghof, 2015
With their show, the two artists Kathrin Graf and Alexandra Knie leave the classical boundaries of art and seek points of reference in the textile, design and science.
With their own approaches, they adapt and transform scientific modes of representation, combine real scientific phenomena with fictional speculations, and play through a possible spectrum of the real.
For her presentation Kathrin Graf uses everyday objects, that she exposes to different transformation processes, such as preservation and fermentation, so that they elude their familiar context. The objects are presented as large-size marco fotographs or installed on tables and racks in the room, which reminds us of the scientific aethetics of presentation. At the Städtische Galerie am Abdinghof Kathrin Graf combines real exhibits of natural scientific collections (like gallstones and archaeological finds) with her artistic works to an extensive installation, which evokes suspicions without creating clarity. Where does reality end and where does imagination begin?
